BETH

I’m asleep in my own bed when my phone buzzes suddenly. It’s very dark, and so I blearily force myself awake as I grope for it upon my bedside table. It’s charging, connected to the plug, and I fumble and drop the damned thing on the floor.

“Shit!”

I turn on my bedside table lamp. The phone has gone off. I scramble to pick it up.

I have a missed call. Chris.

I don’t care anymore. Be damned my pride. I hit the ‘Dial’ button.

Chris picks up at first ring.

“Chris!” I cry, looking at the table clock. The dials gleam one forty five a.m.

“Beth.” His voice sounds very far away. The line crackles. “Beth, can you hear me?”

“You’re breaking up.” I hold the phone very close to my ear. “But please, go on. I can hear you.”

“Beth, I’m . . . (crackle) ry, I was . . . (crackle). I tried to find a phone but . . . (crackle crackle).”

My hand squeezes the phone tightly.

“It’s OK,” I say, unable to stop the tears from springing into my eyes. It’s all those penned up emotions. Plus I’m missing him like crazy. “As long as you are OK, I’m OK. Did you find your way to . . . ?” I am reluctant to mention her name, even though I know that it is childish.

“ . . . in a hotel now. On the way. Jesus, I’m tired. I have . . . to go . . . later. How’s your . . . day at work?”

“It was OK,” I say. “I had to work late. I had dinner with the boss.”

With all the static, it’s amazing how he picked that up. “He asked . . . out to dinner?”

I pause.

“It was just dinner, Chris. A work dinner. We talked about the company culture and contracts.”

Why am I so defensive? It seems that I have been so defensive of late with the men in my life.

“Just . . . (crackle) out for Boyd, OK?”

“OK.” I hesitate. “When are you coming home, Chris?”

A long silence. More static.

“ . . . don’t know. But I . . . stay away . . . (crackle) indefinitely.” A light laugh. “I . . . to work.”

Yeah, he has to work.

“Sure,” I say, not wanting to press him. “Let me know. I’ll pick you up at the airport.”

“I have to go, Beth.”

“Bye.”

There’s so much I want to say, but I won’t let myself. Better not commit to saying something I may regret later.

“Bye, Beth. I . . . (crackle) you very much.”

The phone clicks shut on the other end. I grip mine with all the strength in my palm.

Damn it! What did he say? I love you very much? I miss you very much? I care for you very much? What, what?

He wouldn’t say ‘I love you’. We are not yet at that stage in our relationship. I’m not even sure I’m in love with him that way. I certainly care very much for him. I lust after him. I want to wrap my legs around him and hold him tightly.
